The Moab area is an exceptional region and has some of the most spectacular, photogenic sites on earth.  For our workshops I will pick you up at your place of lodging in Moab about an hour before sunrise and we will head out to catch sunrise shots either at Dead Horse Point, Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park, or the North Window/Turret in Arches National Park.  The choice will be yours.  The balance of the morning session will be spent at any number of petroglyph or pictograph sites in the surrounding area.  We always take a mid-day break to avoid shooting in the intense mid-day light that washes out the colors and in general creates too high contrast for good images.  The afternoon/evening session locations depend on the weather and the moon cycle.  False Kiva is a favorite destination of the more adventurous and fit photographers.  False Kiva is a Catgory II site, meaning it's not on the maps and has no signs, parking or trailhead.  For the less adventurous there is an endless supply of ruins, pictographs, petroglyphs and spectacular landscape.  An afternoon shot for the more fit and adventurous is Delicate Arch.  This trek would include a stop at the spectacular Wolff Ranch petroglyphs.

The morning of the second day is similar to the first day, but the afternoon of the second day includes a session of processing your images in Adobe Photoshop CS5.  In past years I found that workshop participants went home with great images full of promise but lacked knowledge of how to do the post-processing that turns a good image into a stunning piece of art suitable for the wall.  This is a hands-on session in which the client will be at the controls of the computer.  We can either stay with this for the full session or run out at the last minute for one final sunset shot.  If we are working under a new moon we will do some night light painting.  If there is enough interest you may choose to work with my Manfrotto pan head shooting some panoramas.

These are "private" and "custom" photo tours in the fullest sense of the word.  You will be fully involved in the decisions of how your workshop time is spent.  I provide Photoshop sessions each day where we will process your images and send you home with the files you need to do professional printing.  Or, I can do the printing for you after your departure, have the prints mounted by DuraPlaq and ship them to you.

The cost of this photo tour is $650, + $75 for each additional person up to 3.  We do only private, one-on-one workshops or we will work with your own personal group.  We do not put together people who don't know each other.  Checks, Paypal or cash only.  50% non-refundable deposit due with registration, full payment due 30 days prior to your dates.  Cancellation due to weather is entirely my decision.  Remember, many of the best photographs happen in changing or inclement weather.

TURN YOUR 2-DAY WORKSHOP INTO A SPECTACULAR 3-DAY SE UTAH EXTRAVAGANZA!

I run very unique guided 3-day workshops and tours in the spring and fall.  These are suitable for the fit and adventurous as the hiking is a bit more demanding and will involve hiking to 2 sites a day with the trail having more elevation variation and being a bit more rugged.  It's about 45 to 60 minutes each way to the sites.  We take our time!

The first day and a half starts the same as the 2-day photo tour described above.  After the evening shot on day 1 we will drive south to Blanding and spend the next day and a half in Cedar Mesa photographing any number of Category II and Category III sites.  Category II sites are definitly off the beaten path sites that are not oon maps and have no signs, trailheads or parking lots.  House Fire Ruins, Fallen Ceiling, Moon House Ruins, Cave Tower and Bear Paw are some of the noteable choices.  These are some of the best preserved ruins in all of the southwest and are not "tourist destinations".  Most likely we will have each site to ourselves.  This is a wonderful trip for people who like to get out and do a bit of hiking with their photography.  This is truly a trip you will remember for a lifetime!

I provide Photoshop sessions each day where we will process your images and send you home with the files you need to do professional printing.  Or, I can do the printing for you after your departure, have the prints mounted by DuraPlaq and ship them to you.

The fee for this workshop is $750.

  What you will need:

  • A digital SLR camera and its owner’s manual
  • The physical ability to hike at least 50 minutes each way carrying your gear
  • A tripod
  • Desert-appropriate clothing and sunscreen
  • A small flashlight or headlamp
  • A stick-drive of at least 4 GB for downloading your work from the Photoshop session

NEW!  –  3 DAY
CEDAR MESA / TRAIL OF THE ANCIENTS PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

October 5 - 7, 2012

Cedar Mesa holds some of the most unusual and best-preserved ruins in all the southwest.  Several different clans passed through this area on their long migration and produced dwellings of distinct architectural styles in a relatively small geographic area.  Most of these are Class II sites... there are no signs, no trailheads and they aren't on the maps.  The trick to photographing them is to be there in the right season and at the right time of day.  Being 30 minutes late can mean the difference between a stunning, eye-popping photograph and an average washed out image.  We know the locations and we know the timing.  We can also provide the photo tips to be sure you come home with images you'll want to hang on your wall!

We'll start in Moab on the 19th and spend a day photographing in Canyonlands and/or Arches, then head south to Cedar Mesa.  We will depart each day about an hour before sunrise to be set up at our sunrise location before the sun comes up.  The remainder of the 4-hour morning photography session will be spent at Bear Ruin, Cave Tower, Horse Collar, Fallen Ceiling, House Fire and the stunning Moon House Ruin working on lighting, composition and getting the most from your camera. The local authorities have been in discussions for a few years now about closing many of these to the public.

We’ll take a break midday and head out again mid-to-late afternoon for another 4-hour photography session that will include sunset shots and possibly a night light-painting session if the weather is favorable.  I provide Photoshop sessions each day where we will process your images and send you home with the files you need to do professional printing.  Or, I can do the printing for you after your departure, have the prints mounted by DuraPlaq and ship them to you.

This is not a trip for everyone.  We will work at a pace that is comfortable for everyone, but you must be a good hiker and not have a fear of edges/heights.  I will provide transportation from your lodging in town to the photo tour location.

What you will need:

  • A digital SLR camera and its owner’s manual
  • The physical ability to hike at least 20 minutes carrying your gear
  • A tripod
  • Desert-appropriate clothing and sunscreen
  • A small flashlight or headlamp

The cost of this photo tour is $700 per person with a maximum of 4 people.  Lodging and meals are not included.  This trip is particularly suited to RVers and campers.  Lodging is available nearby, I will have some rooms reserved, and remote camping is a possibility, but we will have to work out ways to charge your batteries, etc.  50% non-refundable deposit is due upon registration.  Checks, PayPal or cash     Cancellation due to weather is entirely my decision.  Remember, many of the best photographs happen in changing or inclement weather.

Possible shoot sites include Moon House Ruins, House Fire Ruins, Cave Tower, Bear Paw, Fallen Ceiling and Horse Collar.
